LGBTQ+ & Non-Traditional Families
At Life Love Law, we recognize that families come in all shapes and sizes. We support families of all types, including families composed of members of the LGBTQ+ community. Everyone deserves the right to choose their family, and we aim to represent you with honesty, integrity, and consideration for your special circumstances. We work with unique families on legal matters relating specifically to family law, including divorce, agreements, parentage and child custody.
Family Law Legal Services for the LGBTQ+
We provide a full spectrum of marriage-related legal services for LGBTQ+ couples and partnerships, which include pre- and post-nuptial agreements as well as dispute resolution. We also work with families who may prefer a domestic partnership by developing agreements that seek to protect the financial and personal interests of all involved.
Atlanta laws for adoption and parentage can be confusing matters, and they can become even more so for same-sex and non-traditional families. We aim to help LGBTQ+ couples understand their rights and help to take action in cases involving adoption, reproductive options, and other parentage legal matters.
We can also assist with issues of child custody, which can be a tricky morass to navigate when only one parent might be legally recognized as the parent of a child. The laws governing child custody for same-sex parents in Atlanta differ somewhat to heterosexual parents, but Life Love Law is happy to help guide you through the process and seek the best outcome for your children and you. Suzy Life, our head attorney, has in-depth knowledge of the child custody laws in the Atlanta area, and has experience in bringing resolutions to these important family issues.
Parenting agreements are vital documents for non-traditional families, as they detail each partner’s parent intent with permanent parent-child relationships. Judges often rely on these documents to guide their decisions in custody matters. Life Love Law can help to draft and execute these agreements for LGBTQ+ families.
Consensual Non-Monogamous Families
There are two things that we’ve learned from same-sex marriage that support a person’s right to engage in plural relationships, or polyamory.
First: the consenting sexual behavior an adult, in the privacy of their bedroom, does not affect that person’s ability to be a fit parent.
Second: every person deserves to be allowed to choose their family.
All of our family law legal services can be applied to consensual non-monogamous families. Aiding you in your family’s legal matters with integrity and dignity is of utmost importance to us.
Kink-Friendly Attorney Services
Even with the progressive movements that have been taking hold across the county, the South remains deeply conservative, and those practicing BDSM or indulging in fetish practices can quickly find themselves the subject of a modern day witch hunt, especially when children are involved.
Although modern psychiatry is catching up slowly but surely, the views of Georgia family law attorneys often have not. It’s particularly critical in any legal matter touching on family issues that a client be able to speak openly and honestly about the realities of their lifestyle to their attorney. That’s not possible where an attorney may believes BDSM or other kink practices to be “perverted” and “sick”.
Suzy Life is personally and intimately familiar with this subject, and knows how to argue these issues in court in the context of custody issues or criminal charges, and do so with conviction on your behalf. We keep up-to-date with recent DSM changes on BDSM, providing that consenting adults need not be classified as mentally ill for choosing sexual behavior outside of the mainstream. We welcome the opportunity to champion cases where people’s personal sexual practices are being used against them.
Suzy A. Life is a member of NCSF and is listed in their Kink-Aware Professionals Directory.
